It all begins with an idea…or a sponsor!

Our Mission

“To provide a fun, healthy and competitive environment in which local athletes of all abilities can achieve their personal triathlon goals.”

Our Club History

TThe North Harbour Triathlon Company was established in 1984 by Phil Briars and Dave Robertson, with the goal of promoting triathlon events across Auckland’s North Shore. The athletes who would go on to form the North Harbour Triathlon Club provided the manpower to run these early events—some of which are still organised by the club today.

The club officially came together in 1986, when 15 founding members—each from different sporting backgrounds—connected at the Les Mills World of Fitness Gym. At the time, the gym had become a hub for runners and cyclists and was strongly supportive of the emerging sport of triathlon. The group even hosted a popular race in St. Heliers for several years, until growing traffic issues forced its closure.

Phil Briars led the club through its formative years. A particular highlight came in 1990, when he served as Race Director for the opening event of the Commonwealth Games. That race saw Kiwi triathletes Rick Wells and Erin Baker take home gold medals. Rick Wells, a member of the North Harbour Triathlon Club, was one of several club athletes who competed at a high level during this time.

The club’s influence has occasionally extended beyond the world of triathlon. In 1998, while tramping the Inca Trail, one of our members attracted attention from locals impressed by his collection of club T-shirts. So taken were they with the distinctive design and the word “New Zealand” boldly printed on the front, they asked to keep the shirts as souvenirs.
